IT tips for new Postgraduate and Erasmus students

It was great to meet all of you who attended our library tours last week. We know all too well how hard it is to find your way around the university campus and the library. We have been assisting new students for years (some of us for decades) and to give you even more help, we have decided to share a few IT tips with you.

  1. Setting the WiFi

wifiThe University of Aberdeen provides authenticated access to the internet for registered students from most academic, administrative and residential buildings.

You can set up the WiFi connection either on your computer or your phone. Please, follow the links below for instructions and more information:

Computers:
Wireless connection – Mac 10.9+
Wireless connection – Windows 7
Wireless connection – Windows 8
Wireless connection – Windows 10
Wireless Connection – Chromebook

Phones:
Wireless connection – Android
Wireless connection – iPhone

  1. Printing

MFDWhile you are on campus, you can send documents (PDFs, Word docs, images, charts, etc.) directly to networked printers. (We actually call them MFDs – multi-function devices – because they can be used for printing, photocopying and scanning).
But, this is not the only way of printing at the university. You can use your own computer as well, once you have set up wireless printing on them. The following guides explain more about the services:

Help with printing – an introduction for students
Printing – Windows 10 PCs/Laptops
Printing – Mac or Macbook OS X 10.13.6

  1. Top up your print budget

As stated above, MFDs can be used for a number of purposes: photocopying, scanning or printing. Scanning is a free service but you need to pay for photocopying and printing. Use your student ID card to access the services at the MFDs.

Every student has a printing budget from which charges for all jobs are deducted. Each time when you use your ID card for printing or photocopying, the cost will be taken off your print budget. As a new student, you start off with an initial print budget of £1.00. As long as you have credit on your print budget, you can print.

You can check your balance or top up your print budget through the PrintManage  application. On classroom PCs, you will find this app on the Desktop. If you want to use your own computer, please go to https://printmanage.abdn.ac.uk/ and switch user to ‘Use another account’. Login with you university username and password, and follow the onscreen instructions to do the top up online. All payments are made in exact multiples of £1.00. Minimum payment is £5.00, maximum payment is £20.00.

Alternatively, you can credit your print budget by cash in the following places in Old Aberdeen campus: the coffee shop in the MacRobert Building (ground floor); The Sir Duncan Rice Library (ground floor) and the shop in the Students’ Infohub.

If you need more information about IT services at the University of Aberdeen, and particularly about printing, please visit the web pages of Learners Toolkit.
