Service news – Printing from your personal devices

IT problems

IT Services has confirmed that due to essential maintenance, the Printanywhere service will be unavailable until further notice.

During this time, you will not be able to send documents to print from your personal devices using the Printanywhere service. Printing from a University classroom PC will not be affected.

You can still send documents to the printer from your devices using our WebPrint service. More information on this can be found here.

Remember, WebPrint is not suitable for printing law essays as it defaults to double sided printing and this cannot be changed. Please, use a classroom PC instead, and select Print One Sided option before sending your document to the MFD.

If you need further help, please get in touch with us.

Getting help with your dissertation – printing and binding

Hard binding

Hard binding – image taken from The Print Shop, University of Aberdeen

As the time of the summer dissertation submission is fast approaching, we would like to provide you with some information about printing and binding. If you are a postgraduate student preparing for a dissertation submission, you might find this post especially useful.

Once you have finished your thesis and completed the final check, you might want to get your work printed and bound. The Print Shop (23 St. Machar Drive – Auris Building, Old Aberdeen) will be able to help you with both. If you are busy, you do not need to go there because they accept requests via email (printshop@abdn.ac.uk).

In your email, you have to specify your request (binding style, copies required, etc.), and attach a copy of your dissertation in a PDF file. (Word files will not be accepted.) The Print Shop staff will have a quick glance over the text (for incorrect margins or page numbers, etc.), and email you back with the suggested corrections and the price prior to start any work. Do not expect them though to check every grammatical or spelling mistake or to proofread your dissertation.

Please, check the following information for printing prices:

80gsm paper

  • A4 b/w printing – 3p per page (double sided 5p)
  • A4 colour printing – 10p per page (double sided 19p)
  • A3 b/w printing – 4p per page (double sided 6p)
  • A3 colour printing – 11p per page (double sided 20p)
(Add 1p to above prices for 100gsm paper.)

You also have the option to acquire binding services only. In that case, theses will be handed in to The Print Shop already printed. Both, soft binding and hard binding are available there.

Soft binding

Soft binding could be Comb & Ring style binding, Metal style binding or Card style binding. In case, you need Card binding, you can choose from the following colour card options: white, green, pink, blue or black. As soft binding takes less time than hard binding, you can usually get your work bound within a day or even less time. Please check The Print Shop website for service times. For prices, please, see the bullet points below:

Hard binding

If you wish so, The Print Shop can provide hard binding services for you. As it is more complicated job, they require at least a week to bind your dissertation. For example, if you submit your thesis on Monday, you can collect it the following Monday. In exceptional circumstances or Bindery closures, it may take longer time.

There are four colour options available for this type of binding: black, navy, green, or wine. For basic information about prices, please see the list here:

  • up to 2 copies £30.00 each
  • 3 or more copies £27.00 each
(based on a maximum of 420 pages. If a thesis is more than this, it will be bound as 2 volumes)
  • University of Aberdeen gold block logo – £2.95 per volume.

Express printing/binding services are also available there for extra cost.

Two ways to top-up your print budget in Old Aberdeen campus

MFDIs your credit too low for printing and you have an assignment to submit? Don’t panic, just keep on reading this post.

You can top up your print budget online by using our PrintManage application. On classroom PCs, you will find this app on the Desktop. If you want to use your own computer, please go to https://printmanage.abdn.ac.uk/ and switch user to ‘Use another account’. Login with your university username and password, and follow the onscreen instructions to do the top up online. All payments are made in exact multiples of £1.00. Minimum payment is £5.00, maximum payment is £20.00.

The other way to credit your print budget is to go to the coffee shop either in the MacRobert Building or in The Sir Duncan Rice Library, where staff can do the top up for you by cash.  This service is also available in the shop of the Union Brew (Students’ Union Building).

IT tips for new Postgraduate and Erasmus students

It was great to meet all of you who attended our library tours last week. We know all too well how hard it is to find your way around the university campus and the library. We have been assisting new students for years (some of us for decades) and to give you even more help, we have decided to share a few IT tips with you.

  1. Setting the WiFi

wifiThe University of Aberdeen provides authenticated access to the internet for registered students from most academic, administrative and residential buildings.

You can set up the WiFi connection either on your computer or your phone. Please, follow the links below for instructions and more information:

Computers:
Wireless connection – Mac 10.9+
Wireless connection – Windows 7
Wireless connection – Windows 8
Wireless connection – Windows 10
Wireless Connection – Chromebook

Phones:
Wireless connection – Android
Wireless connection – iPhone

  1. Printing

MFDWhile you are on campus, you can send documents (PDFs, Word docs, images, charts, etc.) directly to networked printers. (We actually call them MFDs – multi-function devices – because they can be used for printing, photocopying and scanning).
But, this is not the only way of printing at the university. You can use your own computer as well, once you have set up wireless printing on them. The following guides explain more about the services:

Help with printing – an introduction for students
Printing – Windows 10 PCs/Laptops
Printing – Mac or Macbook OS X 10.13.6

  1. Top up your print budget

As stated above, MFDs can be used for a number of purposes: photocopying, scanning or printing. Scanning is a free service but you need to pay for photocopying and printing. Use your student ID card to access the services at the MFDs.

Every student has a printing budget from which charges for all jobs are deducted. Each time when you use your ID card for printing or photocopying, the cost will be taken off your print budget. As a new student, you start off with an initial print budget of £1.00. As long as you have credit on your print budget, you can print.

You can check your balance or top up your print budget through the PrintManage  application. On classroom PCs, you will find this app on the Desktop. If you want to use your own computer, please go to https://printmanage.abdn.ac.uk/ and switch user to ‘Use another account’. Login with you university username and password, and follow the onscreen instructions to do the top up online. All payments are made in exact multiples of £1.00. Minimum payment is £5.00, maximum payment is £20.00.

Alternatively, you can credit your print budget by cash in the following places in Old Aberdeen campus: the coffee shop in the MacRobert Building (ground floor); The Sir Duncan Rice Library (ground floor) and the shop in the Students’ Infohub.

If you need more information about IT services at the University of Aberdeen, and particularly about printing, please visit the web pages of Learners Toolkit.

Printing and binding your dissertation

Printing in the Library
When you are ready to print your work:

  1. Open the document and click on the FILE tab at the top left hand side of the screen.
  2. Choose Print. This will bring up the printing menu.

Colour printer

3. Make sure to choose
COLOUR-pull-pcl on class-print.uoa.abdn.ac.uk
to print in colour.

If you only wish to print certain pages in colour, specify the range in Settings. (Remember to retrieve the job from the colour printer. In Taylor Library, this is the far end MFD in the photocopy area.)

4. Still in Settings, set the printer to One Sided if you wish so. The default setting is Print on Both Sides. You also have options for defining the size, orientation and margins of your document, as well as the number of pages per sheet.

  • Printing charges for black & white or colour can be found here.
  • See our other posts: printing single-sided and printing one item from a printing queue. Remember that once a document has been sent to the printer, no changes can
    be made!

The Print Shop
For even better printing quality, you can discuss the available printing options with staff at The Print Shop. The Print Shop is located on the ground floor of The Sir Duncan Rice Library, behind the steps leading to Special Collections. You will be required to submit your dissertation or thesis printout or send it by email (in one PDF) and staff will email you back with the cost for printing and binding. If the file is too large, you can use ZendTo or Dropbox.

  • Charges for printing are 6p per page for black & white and 35p per page for colour 80gsm A4. For more details and options click here.

The Print Shop offers a number of binding options for dissertations and theses:

  • For soft binding, see options and prices here. Dissertation soft binding can take from 30 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the volume of orders. Thesis soft binding can take a day or two.
  • Hard binding of theses when binding up to 2 copies costs £29.70 each, or £26.95 each from 3 copies and above. In your email, remember to state the number of copies you need and the hard cover colour. (Black, navy blue, maroon or green.) Hard binding takes about a week to be completed; date and time for collection will be offered once staff have your affirmative reply. (Completion times are subject to change at the discretion of the departments involved.) More information on hard binding here.
