Kluwer Arbitration – accessing e-books from off-campus

In the last few days, we got many requests regarding the book: Private Dispute Resolution in International Business: Negotiation, Mediation, Arbitration (by Klaus Peter Berger, Vol. 1 and Vol.2). The volumes are available in print in Taylor Library or online through Kluwer Arbitration. If you are accessing the book from off-campus, you need to use VDI. Please follow the link below to get access to our full VDI guide: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/toolkit/documents/uploads/remote-access-vdi.pdf). I would also advise to check the IT web pages. The best way to access the book is to go to Primo and login at the top right corner of the screen (please use your university IT username and password). In Primo, every item has a specific permalink. Please follow this link to the book: https://abdn.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/44ABE_INST/1eeeind/alma990016606990205941

On the Primo page, you can see all sorts of information about the item. Scroll down to see the ‘View Online‘ section, and then follow the link to Kluwer Arbitration. Now, you will be directed to the opening page of the book which looks like this:

You can see that, in the middle of the page, both volumes are displayed. If you click on the + sign, next to the volumes, you can get their contents. Select the pages, you need to read.

If you experience problems with VMware Horizon Client, try using VDI form your internet browser. Read more about troubleshooting in the VDI guide.

As law exams start from today, we would like to wish you all the best. We hope you are well and well prepared for the exams. During revision time, quite a few of you asked about online resources. You know very well how to access e-books and electronic journals through Primo, but not everybody is aware of the fact that more and more publishers give us free access to their academic collections. This means that there are more law resources available online than before. This post will highlight a few notable collections:

Bloomsbury Professional

The publisher, Bloomsbury Professional, has given us free access to the following law textbooks:

• Gretton & Steven: Property Trusts & Succession
• MacQueen & Thomson: Contract law in Scotland
• Thomson: Family Law in Scotland
• Dewart & MacQueen; Studying Scots Law
• Himsworth & O’Neill: Scotland’s Constitution Law & Practice
• Guthrie: Social Work Law in Scotland

Oxford Law Trove

Another important resource is Oxford Law Trove, which is Oxford University Press’s online platform for law textbooks. You can get temporary access to more than 190 titles there.

To access this collection, follow this link to the Library’s web page at:

1. On the library page, go to the Temporary Access to Additional E-Resources section.
2. Scroll down to Oxford Law Trove, and click on the arrow next to the title.
3. Follow the link provided in that section to log in to the collection.
4. On the publishers’ login page, check the left hand side of the screen under the Law Trove logo, and in the pale blue login box, click on Sign in via your Institution.
5. On the next page, find and select University of Aberdeen.
6. An authentication box will appear, and you will need to enter your university IT username and password to log in to Law Trove.

Within the collection:
– You can click on the Subject tab (on the top left of the screen, under the Law Trove logo) to see the different categories there,
– or, you can use the Search box in the top right corner of the screen.

Westlaw UK

Finally, do not forget that there are law textbooks available on Westlaw UK. The route to the Westlaw UK database is the same as it was: through Primo.  Once you have logged in, click on the arrow next to the Westlaw logo (on the top left corner of the screen), and select Books from the drop-down menu. On the Westlaw Books page, browse through the 336 book titles available to you.

Service News – Exporting the contents of your e-Shelf in Primo

The Library Service at the University of Aberdeen is preparing for a major system upgrade in January 2020.  One of the immediate effects of this project is that Primo (our resource discovery tool) will also undergo substantial changes. The new version of Primo has the benefit of improved search and retrieval facilities, and its new layout will be more suitable for mobile devices and tablets.

If you are one of those library users who regularly uses Primo and routinely saves items on e-Shelf, please, bear in mind that those items will not be automatically transferred. You will need to export the items of your e-Shelf in Primo or the Library Catalogue before Christmas.

Please consult the following Primo and Library Catalogue guides for guidance how to do the transfer.

Tip of the Day: finding e-books via Westlaw UK

1) List of books on Westlaw UK

To access books on the legal database Westlaw, go to the Library home page at www.abdn.ac.uk/library/ and type ‘Westlaw UK’ into the Search Our Collections box. Follow the link to Westlaw UK from the results screen on Primo and you will be prompted to log in with your University computer username and password through the Shibboleth authentication route.

There are 8 different tabs on the Westlaw UK website; go to Books. Westlaw will present you with a list of text books that we have access to in full text. Significant titles in the collection include:

• Anton’s Private International Law 3rd edn.
• Archbold Criminal Pleading Evidence and Practice 2018 edn.
• Davidson: Arbitration 2nd edn.
• Macphail’s Sheriff Court Practice 3rd edn. 
• Palmer’s Company Law
• Redfern & Hunter: Law and Practice of International Commercial Arbitration 6th edn.
• Renton and Brown Criminal Procedure 6th edn.
• The Law of Contract in Scotland 3rd edn.

 

 

Click on a title and you will be given the choice to use the Free Text search box to a keyword search within the book, or to browse its contents through Mainwork.

2) If you come across an e-book while searching Primo…

Often a book can be available in different editions and different formats. These books are identified in Primo with the notation ‘multiple versions found’.

To understand this option, try the following search:

1. Go to Primo and enter the following keywords into the search box under the Books+ tab:
   law contract Scotland McBryde
2. Primo will find 2 records containing those words. The record for: The Law of Contract in Scotland by William McBryde appears to include multiple versions. 
3. Open the View 4 versions link.
4. The results are ranked chronologically with the newest edition at the top.
5. Underneath the top entry you will see the words: Online Access. This means that the book is available electronically. To access and read it, click on either the View Online tab or the book title. You may be asked to log in with your University computer username and password. Clicking on the title will take you to the Browse and Search screens within the book. 

Note: To obtain this book in paper format click on Availability. This will give you information about the location and availability of the item.

Notes on using SpringerLink e books

The SpringerLink database comprises collections of books, journals and reference works. It covers numerous disciplines from Architecture & Design to Social Sciences, and, among them, you can also find Law. A significant part of the law collection deals with contemporary problems of international law, environmental law, criminal law or legal theory. The database also provides a wide coverage across other law subjects.

SpringerLink is one of only a few publishers that permit you to lawfully download a whole book to you computer or mobile device, and keep it indefinitely for your own educational or research use.

Remember, downloading books for others is not allowed. Please only download what you need for the research, course or assignment you are working on – mass downloading to build up a library of your own is unfair on the publisher (and authors) and not permitted.

You might find the following instructions useful to get access to this database:

1. Go to Primo
2. Select Find Databases tab (on the top of Primo screen)
3. Click on ‘S‘ to see databases starting with this letter
4. Scroll down to SpringerLink, and click on the database
   – Using on-campus computers, you will be directed to the database at once
   – In case of off-campus access, you might be asked to log into the database
   (Please provide your University username and password)
5. Once inside the database, check the ‘Browse by discipline’ section, and select Law 
6. On the left hand side of the Law page, you can find different boxes:
   – Deselect ‘Include preview-only‘
   – Select Book from the ‘Type Content‘ box
   – Select English from the ‘Language‘ box (Of course if you wish to read books in
   other languages, you have to select the relevant language)
7. Finally, you might like to check the Subdiscipline box to see the different law subjects the database, SpringerLink could offer to you.

From your result screen, click on the book title you would like to read or download, and follow the onscreen instructions.
